BARBANEL BORAH
Unit 114 Sportsperson of the Year for 2002
(by Barbara Beckley)

At the Macon sectional there was a meeting of the Unit 114 Board of Directors and one of the projects of that meeting was the election of the Unit 114 Sportsperson of the year for 2002.  Unit tournament coordinator Bob Heller proposed Barb as Sportsman of the Year and he was selected by an overwhelming majority.

Barbanel Borah - a young buck of 85 - and still an avid supporter of bridge in Georgia - has made many substantial contributions lo these many years.

He chaired the Senior Citizens Regional at Calloway Gardens for 7 years, and has run 25 Sectionals. An ACBL certified bridge teacher and an ACBL certified trainer of directors, he has served 30 years on the board of Unit 114, twice as Vice President and President. He also served twice as Vice President and President on District 7, and 10 years on the Board of the Mid-Atlantic Conference. A retired Colonel, he served in the Pacific in the "big one".

An old jock from way back - as a young man he played football for the University of Tennessee; retired after 7 years as unbeaten ping-pong champion at Warner Robins; and is a fire arms expert who still shoots with devastating, mind-boggling accuracy.

Barb's gentle, amiable demeanor - marred only by unwarranted ambitions to be a great singer - has made him many friends - and he has justly earned the official title of Poet Laureate at the Eatonton club.

This award is made more poignant because his late wife Katy was one of the first recipients of this honor. Barb is completely flabbergasted at his selection and promises to do better next time.

So hold on to your toupees - he 'aint done yet!
