The Unit 114 board meeting in Macon, GA was called to order at 5:35 pm on May 31, 2003. In attendance were: Larry Rich (president), Mike Kovacich, Nancy Hetsko (Proxy for Joe Sherwood, Mary Ann Bateman, Betty Myers, Dick Myers, Ann Hedden (Proxy for Liz Swanson), Barbara Heller, Bob Heller (Proxy for Gabriel Fadel), Charlie Ogburn, Ruth Suggs, Myrtis Howell, Don Lowery, Ken Parker, Beatrice Kemp, Josie Mitchell and Chuck Whidden. Larry Rich reported on the move of the Peachtree City Sectional up one week in September to accommodate the NAP finals so that it will not be opposite the Tunica Regional. The new date is September 12-14. There will not be a Friday afternoon session of the sectional due to the move. The Unit Championship game scheduled for September 12 will move to September 19. Dick Myers moved that the minutes from the last meeting be accepted as corrected. Mike Kovacich seconded. Motion passed. Mary Ann gave the Treasurer’s Report and stated that we did not move the $4,000 from checking to the Money Market account per last meeting’s minutes but advanced the money to begin the Nationals 2005 account. An additional $6000 was taken from another money market account and added to it. Josie Mitchell asked how much of the money in the accounts belonged to the National. Approximately $65000 more can be moved if need be to the Nationals 2005 account. Mike Kovacich moved and Dick Myers seconded the approval of the treasurer’s report. It passed. We have a total of $137,943.37 on hand. This total is all accounts, including the Nationals’ Fund. There is $3,419.19 in the checking account. Tournament report -- All Unit tournaments are sanctioned through 2004 except Valdosta in 2004. We need the Valdosta tournament information immediately for the District 7 publication for the 2003 tournament. Bob Heller stated that Tom Wight has indicated interest in conducting a Non-Life-Master Sectional I Macon for 2004. Bob also made everyone aware of the change of sites for the Atlanta sectional. The tournament will be held at the Hilton in Northeast Atlanta in Gwinnett-Peachtree Corners at the corner of Peachtree Industrial and Jimmy Carter with a room rate of $49 through 2005. This change will probably take effect with the end of the year sectional. A discussion was held as to whether Peachtree City should be asked to move next year as well from the Tunica Regional dates. Ann Hedden made us all aware that Macon had asked to also host the Unit final for 2004. Charlie Ogburn moved and Myrtis Howell seconded that the NAP final be moved around with the single site being Macon in 2004. They accepted the amendment made by Mike Kovacich that we amend this motion to state that it be one site not opposite any major regional such as Tunica. The vote was 4 for and 9 against. The motion failed. Mike Kovacich then moved that if we have a single site NAP final that it not be scheduled against any major regional tournament within a 500 mile radius of the site. Beatrice Kemp seconded. The motion failed with 6 for and 8 opposed. Bob Heller moved that Peachtree City host the 2004 NAP final at the date to be determined by the tournament chairman based upon the availability of the fall date most convenient with the school host site. September 17-19 is most likely dates but Ken will have the discretion to move it if it will fit into the tournament schedule approved by Bob Heller. The motion passed 9 for and 2 opposed. GNT -- Liz Swanson was not in attendance so Ann Hedden gave a brief report.. There was a good turnout throughout the District in the final. Liz has contacted Larry Rich about the possibility of hosting one of the four qualifying sites again for next year. Electronic Contact--Chuck Whidden reported that mailing labels were sent to Warner Robins for the tournament but was unsure as to what had happened to them. Pips ‘n Tip—Mike Kovacich reported that the District has authorized units to buy space in the District 7 publication that is published 6 times a year. As a unit, we need to decide if we want to do this on a regular basis and how many pages we with to purchase. The pages will be $150 to $180 depending on the shape the copy is in when submitted to Bob Heller. Much discussion followed and it was determined that we need to disseminate information about the annual meeting, sportsperson of the year, and other newsworthy items. It was moved by Barbara Heller and seconded by Dick Myers that we try to purchase 2-4 pages twice a year—once in March and once in November. Motion carried. Mary Ann Bateman consented to coordinate the gathering of information. Everyone needs to send info to her immediately. Barbara Heller will assist her as needed. Nominating Committee—Larry Rich appointed a Nominating Committee. Mike Kovacich will chair it as per the bylaws that state a past president must be the chair of the committee. Dick Myers and Ken Parker will serve with Mike. If anyone wishes to run for a unit office, they can notify this committee or submit their own nomination in writing 30 days prior to the election in the spring to be placed on the slate. Sportsperson of the Year—We had four excellent candidates nominated for Sportsperson of the Year. They are as follows and their letters of nomination are posted on the website: Jim Morgan, Nancy Hetsko, Larry Hayslip, and Ron & Evelyn Palmer. We want to congratulate each of these fine nominees on being nominated by their clubs and friends. Jim Morgan was elected as our Sportsperson of the Year and Nancy Hetsko was honored with runner-up. BridgeAtSchools--Barbara Heller asked the Unit to sponsor a Sectional Tournament
at Clubs (STaC) with the proceeds to benefit BridgeAtSchools. Dick Myers
seconded. Bob Heller examined the tournament calendar and recommended September
22-28 for the STaC. Carey Snider will be the Director-in-Charge. Our next meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. Saturday, September 13th, 2003 in Peachtree City. Be sure to notify Barbara if you cannot attend. Respectfully submitted, Barbara Heller Unit 114 Secretary |
