The meeting was called to order at the Atlanta Sectional, May 28, 2005.
Members in attendance: Sandy Barrow, President, Barbara Heller-Secretary, Marty Nathan-DBAA Rep, Nancy Hetsko-VP, Ann Hedden (NAP Coordinator), Mary Ann Bateman-Treasurer, Curt Barbee-Peachtree City area and Pamela Barbee (guest), Liz Swanson-Athens area, Ruth (proxy for Tom Wight-Macon area) and Harpe Suggs (Warner Robins), Jan McGaughey (Columbus proxy), Jan Word-DBAA Rep, Bob Ayers (proxy for Beatrice Kemp-DBAA Rep), Dick Myers-Conyers Area 6, Betty Myers-Northwest Georgia Area 1, Larry Rich-Northeast Georgia Area 2, Bob Heller-Tournament Coordinator. The minutes were approved as read. Treasurer’s report-Mary Ann Bateman stated that we still have $20,000 in account earmarked for Nationals. Most of the money is kept in money market. Profit to the unit from the Roswell Spring Sectional was $2,422. Committee Reports: Tournament Coordinator- Bob Heller reported Roswell unit sectional was huge success. There will be a sectional there during the same time of year. It will be a four-day sectional not a five-day. The DBAA will be hosting if this is approved. Gainesville tournament is over 4th of July. Unit is sponsoring this. Entitlement –Nancy Hetsko reported on a request from Bill Marks. There are a large number of social bridge group players in Roswell. He plans on running special lessons with trophies. There was a recommendation to give him $250. Dick Myers seconded. Marty Nathan amended motion that Bill Marks provide feedback at Macon meeting on progress. Motion with the amendment passed unanimously. NAP- Ann Hedden reported that anyone who qualifies at club level can play at district finals in Spartanburg October 29th and 30th. Educational liaison-Nancy Hetsko reported on the Intermediate-Novice program for nationals. Free games are being offered on first weekend, She is doing a flyer. Social bridge players are encouraged to attend as well. Patty Tucker is running a junior bridge camp July 11-15. Money is available for grants. Old Business: Sandy Barrow will appoint a mentoring committee by the Macon meeting. Nancy reported on a mentoring game being run by Jan Word on Sundays in Alpharetta. In addition, Nancy runs a mentoring program. Sandy reported on Macon’s mentoring game. Liz asked about the email vote that was held for to hold the Gainesville sectional. This vote was taken by polling each unit board member. She made a motion that any email vote be copied to each unit member so everyone knows who voted for what and what comments they have on the vote. If time allows, everyone should be given the opportunity to have discussion. Unanimous. Liz asked that an updated list of all members of this board with addresses and emails be available at next meetings. New Business: Sportsman of Year. Dick Myers moved that we close nominations. The candidates are Gil Bateman, Ann Hedden and Ken Parker. Both Warner Robins and Macon recommended Gil in separate letters. Vote was taken-Gil Bateman won and Ken Parker was second. Announcement was made before game time at the Atlanta Sectional. Sandy Barrow reported that the Executive Committee appointed Mitchell Locklear, Bob Duvall, Nancy Hetsko, Larry Rich to the newly formed District 7 Goodwill committee. In the future, our unit will be able to appoint 3 members and anyone can submit a name for consideration to the Executive Board of the Unit. Barbara asked that our Unit sponsor a gift for the VIPs basket at the Atlanta NABC since we are the host unit. She was authorized to buy Chateau Elan wine to represent Georgia Unit 114 in the basket. Dick Myers moved and Curt Barbee seconded. Three opposed. Bob moved that we have two pages for July D7 News. Passed. Dick Myers says trophies are shined. Ruth Suggs says it’s been a nice year and appreciated being honored as sportsman of year ending with this tournament Marty Nathan says DBAA wants to know if the unit wants it to continue spearheading the annual change of rank folks. Josie says the DBAA view is to give it back to the unit. Liz moves that DBAA be approved to continue spearheading change of rank party. The issue of money was raised. Nancy Hetsko said that a couple of years ago the Alpharetta club decided to do its own change of rank party at its expense. Liz moved that it reaffirm that any club that wishes to run a change of rank party is welcome to do it. Passed with two no votes. Meeting adjourned.
