Minutes of Board Meeting

Gainesville Sectional

President Nancy Hetsko called the meeting to order at 5:25 PM.

Other voting members in attendance were:   Nancy Watkins as proxy for Tom Wight, (V-Pres), Mary Ann Bateman (Treas), Betty Myers (Area 1), Larry Rich (2), Kevin Collins (4), Dan Papineau as proxy for Nicolas Hammond (4), Beatrice Kemp (4 and acting secretary), Josie Mitchell (4), Allison Milhelm as proxy for Jan Word (4) , Liz Swanson (5), Dick Myers (6), and Harpe Suggs (9).

Also attending were:  Ann Hedden (Membership/NAP), Mike Kovacich (Past Pres), Patty Tucker (Recorder) and club representatives Jimmy Lord (Dublin) and James Dover (Lanierland)

Committee Reports

The prior minutes were approved after a correction in the spelling of Mike Kovacich’s name.

Treasurer’s – Mary Ann Bateman presented the Treasurer’s Report (attached).  It was approved.

Membership –  Ann Hedden has recently taken this over and has begun sending letters with coupons to various clubs.

Tournaments –  Dick Myers handed out new schedules (attached).  The NAP part needs to be revised as the 2007 and 2008 venues were reversed.  The Roswell Senior Center has approved our 2007 tournament dates.  He suggested that we nevertheless look for other locations, as we cannot hold tournaments there after 2007.  Eatonton does not want to run its spring tournament any longer but they will provide refreshments if the unit will run it.  Dick would like to maintain the sanction and will look for locations closer to Atlanta, perhaps at the horse park in Conyers.

It was unanimously approved that the unit continue the tournament.

GNT – District finals will be in Charlotte the weekend of November 11-12.  This year Flights C and C will play on Saturday and B on Sunday.  This will be rotated in future years.

Trophies – The Junior State Championship will take place on December 2, 2006.   Nancy Hetsko mentioned that the unit has access to some left over trophies.

Dick moved that the Unit engrave either an existing trophy or acquire a new one for around $150.  The motion was seconded and approved.

Education – Nancy announced that Sandy Barrows has resigned as Education Liaison.  She also asked for suggestions for a replacement.

Old Business

Patty Tucker reported that she will request funds for Atlanta Junior Bridge from the ACBL, asking them to match funds that organizations like the DBAA, District 7 and the Unit are contributing.  She is also expanding her efforts for sponsorship from other nonprofit organizations and governments.  She is now asking for $750 per trimester ($2,250 total) from the Unit for programs beginning in January 2007.  She will give progress reports every 4 months and request that at that time funds be approved for the next four-month period.  The board unanimously approved this request.

New Business

Larry Rich stated that he was being asked to have the Board revisit the purpose of the DBAA.  Beatrice asked him who made the request for inclusion in the minutes.  Larry then said he was asking for this himself.  Larry would like the Board to examine the purpose, duties and jurisdiction of the DBAA.

Mike Kovacich gave some historical background about the DBAA.

Dick Myers said the members in the northern area of the DBAA do not feel represented because they have the misconception that the DBAA is the same entity as the Atlanta Duplicate Bridge Club.

Patty Tucker suggested that we should consult with Jack Feagin, past 114 President and currently the president of the DBAA.

Liz thought the unit did not have the power to allow or forbid the formation of an organization.  She further stated that no such organization should have the exclusive right to sponsor sectionals.

Mike suggested that if the Board is going to look into the “purpose” of the DBAA, it should expand this include other bridge associations like those in Macon, Columbus and Peachtree City.  He asked why the DBAA was singled out.  (There was no answer.)

Kevin requested that whenever “new business” is presented that it should be included in the meeting notification.  That would allow for a more serious evaluation of the motion.   In this case, for example, that would have allowed for the person most knowledgeable on the subject – Jack Feagin – to be present.

Nancy closed by saying that she will appoint a committee to review all the areas of the unit.

Josie requested that the entire board should hear the discussion, not just the members of the committee.

Our next meeting will be Saturday, January 20, 2007 between sessions at the Macon sectional.

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

Beatrice Kemp,

Acting Secretary
