ACBL Unit 114 Minutes of Board Meeting Macon Sectional January 19, 2008
Voting members in attendance were: Nancy Hetsko (President), Tom Wight (Vice President), Mary Ann Bateman (Treasurer), Sandy Barrow (past President), Betty Myers (1), Ron Cadora (2), Mike Kovacich as proxy for Kevin Collins (4), Ken Parker as proxy for Curtis Barbee (3), Dick Browne (4), Nicolas Hammond (4), Bob Heller (4), Barbara Heller as proxy for Richard Holland (4), Dick Myers (6), Len Perkins (7), Harpe Suggs (9).
Also attending were: Ann Hedden (Membership/NAP), Larry Rich (Webmaster), Donna Parker (Southside Bridge Club), Ruth Suggs (Guest), Gil Bateman (Guest). The minutes of December 8, 2007, which had been sent to all board members prior to the meeting, were presented. There was a spelling correction noted. The minutes were then approved. Committee Reports Treasurer – Mary Ann Bateman presented the Treasurer’s Report (attached). It was approved.
Election Committee – Mike Kovacich reported that two areas were potentially up for election at the Macon sectional. Letters were sent to clubs in the South and South Central area. There was no candidate for the South area. Tom Wight (incoming President) will appoint after the AGM. There was some confusion about who was responsible for sending letters to clubs and also the exact deadline. Not all clubs received letters on time. There was one candidate for the South Central area received before a January 10 deadline (Harpe Suggs). Another candidate was received before a later deadline (Jimmy Lord). After discussion, the board agreed to accept both nominations. As there are two positions on the board for South Central, both are elected.
The deadlines for the other four areas are coming up soon. Candidates are expected to self nominate to either Marty Nathan (Secretary) or Mike Kovacich (Elections chair). If elections are necessary, they will be held at the Tucker sectional in March (cut-off date for nominations is February 25) except for North Central where any elections will be held at the Covington sectional in March (cut-off date for nominations is February 5). Mike has currently received two nominations for Northwest (2), one for North Central (1), two for Northeast (2) and five for Greater Atlanta (9 but only voting for 4). The numbers in brackets are the number of positions on the board. Greater Atlanta is electing four or five members this year.
Mike presented some proposed changes to the Election Procedures, in both wording and procedure. There was some discussion on the format and content. The motion, “Len and Dick to review Election Procedures document to incorporate discussion” was approved.
Goodwill Committee – There were six nominees for three slots on the Goodwill Committee:
Sandy Barrow Mary Ann Bateman Judy Fendrick Jerry Goldstein Bill Marks Susan Wolfe
A ballot was passed around to voting members to select up to three candidates. Larry Rich monitored. Sandy Barrow, Mary Ann Bateman and Bill Marks were selected.
Tournaments/Trophy – Dick Myers handed out new schedules
Membership – Ann Hedden reported that she had been in the job for 18 months. In the last 6 months of 2006, we had 129 new members and 50 transfer to the Unit. In 2007, there were 267 new members and 111 transferred. The latter figure may not be too accurate because of snowbirds. Ann estimated there could be 20+ snowbirds. Each new member receives one free play good for any club in the Unit and a brochure.
GNT – Bob Heller (for Sam Marks) urged clubs to run GNT events.
Old Business
New Business
Bob Heller proposed the motion, “Each newly elected Unit goodwill member gets 4 free plays at Gatlinburg”. Barbara Heller suggested an amendment that previous winners (from the last 3 years) also receive 4 free plays. The amendment was accepted. The motion was approved. This is the 3rd year of the Goodwill committee. There were 4 Goodwill members in the 1st year and 3 in the 2nd year.
Our next meeting will be Saturday March 29 between sessions at the Atlanta sectional. The meeting was adjourned at 7:10 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Nicolas Hammond Acting Secretary |
